They, also understand that not only the distinction between rural and urban but also the antagonistic relationship of urban to rural have disappeared in a real sense as a result of the radical changes in rural and urban sosieties, especially in the rapid economic growth, in Japan, too. This series of articles is an argument against these understandings. I intend to make clear that the viewpoint of overcoming the antagonistic relationship of urban to rural is still important to study a variety of modern social problems. They include the antagonism between advanced countries and developing countries, international and domestic disputes, overpopulation in urban areas and depopulation in rural areas, urban social problems, environmental and energy problems, and so on, which have risen as a result of unequal and unbalanced regional developments on an international or national scale in the globalization of modem capitalism. This article is one of articles of the series.
