In recent years, the characteristics of naive theory have been clarified and the restructuring of knowledge has been studied. However, when considering the study of literary works, \"understanding before learning\" and how that understanding changes have not been examined. There has not even been the establishment of methods for examining how literary works are understood. This study used the children's story \"Gon the Fox\" by Nankichi Niimi, a work that is used for teaching Japanese, to examine \"understanding before learning\" and the process of change of that understanding. The subject groups were fourth graders and seventh graders. The students' understanding as formed after reading the story but before the class discussions was assumed to be \"understanding before learning\", and the change in understanding of the work was examined based on viewpoints of the accumulation of knowledge and structural change in understanding. The fourth graders tended to read the work under a sympathetic framework, because they tend to read stories by taking the viewpoint of the character. The seventh graders read within a different framework, and they structured their understanding differently. The seventh graders were able to reach a more objective understanding, and to view their own interpretation of the story more objectively.
