Moreover, it is held that not only the distinction between rural and urban, but also the antagonistic urban-rural relationship have disappeared in a real sense, as a result of the radical changes in rural and urban societies, especially in the midst of rapid economic growth, as seen in Japan as well. This series of articles argues against abandoning the approach of urban vs. rural. I intend to make clear that the viewpoint of overcoming urban-rural antagonism is still important in studying various modern social problems. They include the antagonism between advanced and developing countries, international and domestic disputes, overpopulation in urban areas and depopulation in rural areas, urban social problems, environmental and energy problems, and so on, which have arisen from unequal and unbalanced regional development on an international and national scale under the globalization of modern capitalism. This article is one in such a series.
