 note = {英語法助動詞の意味や用法を扱う研究は数多くある（Coates 1983; Westney 1995; 柏野 2002; 長友 2009など）。しかし筆者の知る限り，英語法助動詞がどういう環境（構文，文脈など）で用いられるかに焦点を当てる研究は多くない。こうした環境は，使用依拠アプローチによれば，英語母語話者が英語法助動詞を用いる際に持っている言語知識の一部を構成する（Taylor 2012; Hilpert 2019; 平沢 2019など）。ここに，英語法助動詞を使用依拠的観点からさらに研究を進める余地を見いだせる。
　本稿はそうしたアプローチを根源的mustに適用する。より具体的には，根源的mustが比較的よく生起し得る環境の1つである評言節I must sayに焦点を当て，それが節の左右の周辺部（いわゆる節頭・節尾）に生起する際の談話機能を調査する。この調査を通し，根源的mustの使用に関わる言語知識の一端を明らかにしたい。, The meanings and usages of English modal verbs have been discussed in a voluminous literature on English linguistics. To the best of my knowledge, however, few of the literature have focused on the linguistic environments (such as constructions and contexts) where English modal verbs tend to occur. This issue is worth approaching from a usage-based perspective (Taylor 2012), since those linguistic environments constitute linguistic knowledge with which native speakers of English use English modal verbs.
