The aim is to increase understanding of a given situation, and is primarily concerned with gaining insight into a complex social situation, in this case, the classroom. Critical action research also involves reflection: the teacher is involved in a reflective process throughout the action research project. This paper is a critical action research project undertaken at the University of Manitoba in an English for Academic Purposes writing class. The researcher's objective at the outset of the project was to investigate learner errors in writing academic papers, but as the study progressed the focus of the study changed from an investigation of errors into an investigation of investigating errors: how investigating errors changed the way the author read students' work.
