 note = {本論は，an up / down train（上り／下り列車）のように水平を垂直で理解する奇妙な「上下のメタファー」について考察する。まず，水平軸に比べ垂直軸が我々にとって優位であることを「上下のメタファー」の観点から概観し，水平を垂直で捉えるメタファーが「上下のメタファー」のカテゴリー内でどのように位置づけられるかを確認する。次に，先行研究としてLindner（1981）と瀬戸（1995）を取り上げ，その意義と問題点を指摘する。それを踏まえ，他の実例も併せて考察した上で，本論の立場を明らかにしたい。, This article discusses slightly peculiar up-down metaphors which serve to structure from “vertical” to “horizontal” domain, some of whose instances are “an up / down train” or “the top / bottom of the road”. First of all, we survey a number of up-down metaphorical expressions in relation to the predominance of a vertical axis over a horizontal axis. Next, we review Lindner （1981） and Seto （1995） dealing with “horizontal” expressions which reflect up-down schema, and point out their essentials and problems. Above all, a close examination of these examples shows that the classification by Seto （1995） cannot be maintained.
