Listening to her memories, the narrator shows an inscrutable response. Then their conversation breaks off, and their relationship cools down. How can we interpret the cryptic hyacinth episode, remembered abruptly in fragments? This paper considers the hyacinth episode in The Waste Land from five viewpoints: 1） the hyacinth girl's motif, 2） the narrator's mental attitude, 3） “A Game of Chess” and the hyacinth garden, 4） the second thunder, and 5) the hyacinth girl's images. The hyacinth episode is fragmentary and incomplete. There is, however, a hidden poetical meaning.
